Distinguished and Famous people from Toongabbie
🌾 Thomas Daveney
Thomas Daveney was appointed to establish the government farm at Toongabbie in 1791. A former seaman on Sirius, he directed the clearing and cultivation intended to help feed the struggling colony. The work produced important grain crops but imposed severe demands on convicts, many already weakened by inadequate food and the voyage to Australia. His reputation as a harsh superintendent is an essential part of the account. Daveney later received a local land grant himself. His connection explains the administration behind the farm, while the exhausting labour of the people under his control explains how it actually operated.
🏡 John and Mary Pye
John and Mary Pye built up their Toongabbie holding from a small beginning into a mixed farm. By 1806 their land included wheat, maize, barley, pasture and an orchard, as well as livestock. Governor Macquarie later singled out Pye among the district's industrious settlers, noting well-kept cultivation and a comfortable home at a time when many nearby families were struggling. When John died in 1830, he left several Toongabbie properties to his children. The family story shows the growth of private farms around the earlier government agricultural settlement.
🐑 George Best
George Best and his family developed land north of the government farm's grain fields at Toongabbie. Best moved into livestock production as well as cultivation, supplying meat to the government by 1818. During his 1810 inspection, Governor Macquarie praised Best's property alongside John Pye's for its cultivation, buildings and general order. That favourable assessment stood out against the poor housing and hardship Macquarie observed elsewhere in the district. Best's place in local history comes from this documented farming enterprise during the colony's transition towards private agricultural production.
